Joy entails much more than simply being happy. In fact, even when life is difficult, it is advisable to be joyful! "Count it all joy when you fall into different trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience," James 1:2 says.
Our joy stems from knowing the living God, knowing that all of our sins have been forgiven, knowing that we will live with God for eternity, and knowing that nothing can separate us from God's incredible, overwhelming, never-ending love.
Nothing can ever deprive us of these things. We can rejoice even when we are walking through the Valley of the Shadow of Death because the Lord is our Shepherd. He watches over us, guides us, and blesses us. We can rejoice in the face of various trials because God, the Creator of the Universe, is our loving Father.
If you are having problems experiencing joy, ask the Lord to produce this Holy Spirit fruit in you.
